Is mixing Proto rev 8/9 urukul CPLD firmware possible?

Hi,

I am upgrading my systems to Artiq-9 beta to get access to the new Urukul per-channel features (PR https://github.com/m-labs/artiq/pull/2657).

I believe accessing these features requires updating the CPLD to Proto rev-9, however the old Proto rev-8 API will still work? Please correct me if I'm wrong on this point.

Due to our crate system integration, getting access to the 7x urukul JTAG headers is difficult, so for initial testing, it may be worth it to only upgrade some Urukuls to the new CPLD gateware. Is it expected that this will work, or will cause a big headache?

I believe I just need to change the proto-rev line in the system description file of each kasli?

Your understanding is correct, unless you are upgrading SU-Servos.
In proto-rev 9, a set of Urukul I/O pins were swapped/repurposed on SU-Servos.

The headache is to get the JTAG port to reflash the Urukul CPLD gateware only, like what you have mentioned.
The reset of the proto-rev changes on Urukuls are limited to kernel code.

Correct.
Since you are using a system with mixed proto-revs, I suggest you to specify the proto-revs for every Urukul card clearly in the descriptions, and not rely on the defaults.
Please double check your proto_rev entries in your device_db.py when you are done.
